Is the tour suitable for me? I have never been birding before and can’t easily identify many different bird species?

Accepted Answer

The tour is not a specialist birding tour and is a great introduction to birdwatching. The guides have an excellent knowledge of most of the species you will be seeing. Quality binoculars for each participant and spotting scopes are provided, along with assistance in using them effectively.

Is the tour suitable for me? I am an experienced birder and often undertake tours with a specialist birding guide?

Accepted Answer

While the guides are bird enthusiasts and have an excellent knowledge of most of the species you will be encountering, they do not claim to have the depth of knowledge required to claim to be a specialist birding guide. If any bird species are encountered that they are unsure of, there are specialist guidebooks and app available to assist in identification.

Question 3

How active is the tour and what level of fitness is required?

Accepted Answer

The tour involves very little walking or climbing as the vehicle can take you pretty much directly to the sites we will be visiting. A very low level of fitness or agility is required to undertake the tour.

Question 4

Is the tour suitable for children?

Accepted Answer

The tour involves long periods quietly observing birdlife and may not be suitable for children who do not have the required attention spans or ability to remain quiet and sit still for longish periods. A child’s price is available as some children have a strong interest in nature and wildlife and understand the protocols of observing birdlife.

Question 5

Does the tour pick up from my accommodation?

Accepted Answer

Kununurra pick-ups will be from 6am at the reception of your accommodation. Please be ready 10 minutes early. If you are not staying at one of the accommodation or caravan parks in Kununurra please go to the Kununurra Visitor Centre for pick up.

Question 6

If I have to cancel the tour can I get a refund?

Accepted Answer

Kimberley Naturally will provide a full refund for direct bookings for cancellations more than 24 hours before departure. If less than 24 hours, a refund may be possible if you are able to transfer your booking to another tour and we can resell your seat. Bookings made through 3rd party providers are subject to their conditions on cancelation.

What happens if you cancel the tour?

We will guarantee a confirmed departure for more than 2 passengers will travel unless there are circumstances that are beyond our control. These may include rain or vehicle breakdown or guide illness where we are unable to source an alternative. In the unlikely event that KN cancels the tour, you will be offered a full refund or the opportunity to transfer to a different day.

What precautions are taken to guard against the spread of COVID19 or other viruses?

Accepted Answer

Kimberley Naturally is COVID Safe accredited and has adopted best practice to avoid the potential spread of any viruses. Hand sanitiser is available at all times All equipment is washed and/or sanitised between uses, with binoculars allocated to a participant for the duration of the tour. The spotting scopes are wiped with disinfectant between uses.

Why is the tour departing so early in the morning?

Accepted Answer

As we are the most easterly town in WA, the sun rises very early in Kununurra. Finches are renowned for being active drinking and feeding very early in the morning. Our destination is about a 75 minute drive from Kununurra so unless we depart early, the birds will be gone. Early morning is a lot cooler and a great time of the day to be outside! By getting you back at lunchtime, it also allows you the rest of the day for other activities.

What size group will we have and what sort of vehicle will we be travelling in?

Group size will be 8 maximum and travel with a minimum of 2. Most of the group will travel in an airconditioned Toyota Hiace with all seats having seat belts. A Toyota Landcruiser with 4 passenger seats will be used for the El Questro pick-ups.

I use a walking mobility aid. Is the tour suitable for me?

While the distances to be walked are not long, the paths are a bush track and so therefor not suitable for clients who require wheelchairs or scooters for mobility

Will I get good photos of the birds?

Accepted Answer

In some cases, we can get relatively close to the birds for great photos. The spotting scopes we use have an attachment that allows you to insert your smart phone and take photos of what you are seeing through the scope.

What will be provided in the savannah breakfast?

Accepted Answer

A yogurt, muesli and fruit compote will be available to begin. This is followed by a range of local fruits, pastries and quiches. Beverages will consist of fruit juices, water, brewed coffee and a range of teas.

Can you cater for my special dietary requirement?

Accepted Answer

Yes we can. Please let us know at the time of booking (at least 24 hours in advance) and we can arrange for vegetarian, vegan, gluten or lactose free or other options to be available

What should I wear?

Accepted Answer

It is better to avoid white or brightly coloured clothes. Clothing should be comfortable and suitable for a morning out bush. Long sleeves will assist in sun protection and shoes should be sturdy and comfortable (sandals or thongs are not appropriate). A hat would provide sun protection.

Will there be access to toilets during the tour?

A portable chemical toilet is available for use at both of the sites where will spend some time during the morning.

What should I bring?

Accepted Answer

A personal water bottle, sunscreen and insect repellent carried in a day pack would be useful if available. A fly net may be handy at some times of the year.

Can we be guaranteed to see Gouldian finches?

Accepted Answer

The short answer is that nothing can be guaranteed in the world of observing nature. The areas we will be visiting, however, are very favourable breeding, watering and feeding areas. Over the past several years, Save the Gouldian Fund have developed projects to install nesting boxes in critical habitat such as the areas we will be visiting. This project has successfully increased numbers of the critically endangered Gouldian Finch in the area.

Do you have guides who speak any other languages?

All of our guides only speak English. If we had sufficient notice and for an extra cost, an appropriate language translator may be able to be sourced.

Question 20

What will the weather be like? Will it be hot or rainy?

Accepted Answer

As our tours run from April to October, we avoid the more extreme temperatures and rain to some degree. While there can always be rain at any time of the year, it is rare from May to September. April temperatures will range from mid 20s to mid 30s and October’s temperatures from mid 20s to high 30s. The coolest months are June and July where it ranges from 15 to 30 degrees.

Customers will receive a full refund or credit if at least 24 hours notice of cancellation is provided.If cancellation between 12 and 24 hours notice a partial refund maybe provided. If we cancel for unforseen circumstances or weather, you will receive a full refund.
